Neven Budak’s “Croatian history from 550. until 1100.” book presentation

On Friday, April 13th 2018, Neven Budak’s “Croatian history from 550. until 1100.” book was presented by prof. dr. sc. Marina Vicelja-Matijašić (Department of Art History, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Rijeka), doc. dr. sc. Maurizio Levak (Department of Art History, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Pula), doc. dr. sc. Goran Bilogrivić (Department of History, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Rijeka) and the author  prof. dr. sc. Neven Budak (Department of History, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb).

The book is focused on the so-called dark centuries (7th and 8th), creating and developing of Croatian ethnic identity, forming the Croatian politics and their Christanization, social development, Church organization and culture as a statement and initiator of social relations. The book is based on the newest results in history and related sciences. In addition to some of the most prevalent issues of Croatian medieval history, the author also deals with topics that have only been opened recently. From most books dealing with a similar theme, this differs from periodization, abandoning the usual timelines based on the dynasty history, shifting the focus from political history to social and cultural, different perception and interpretation of ethnic identities, establishing a balance between the coverage of the entire Croatian historical space and highlighting regional differences and, finally, by interdisciplinarity based on the contemporary methodological approach of authorship.

ICONOGRAPHY OF PAIN

that will be held in

Deadline for paper proposals: January 20, 2018

The conference seeks to explore and discuss recent development in the dialogue between art history, history, theology, philosophy, cultural theory and other relevant disciplines concerning the representation and perception of pain (both physical and emotional) in history. Pain represents not only one of the very used subjects in art but also the strong creative force for many artists. It has been recently discussed as being a transformative force in cultural production but also beyond the cultural and temporal boundaries. It can be also perceived within specific methodological paradigm of the Warburg’s Pathosformel as well as within the broader theoretical contexts. We welcome academic papers that will approach these subjects in interdisciplinary and methodologically diverse angles. The themes and subjects include, but are not limited to the following:

  • pain as art form
  • torture, punishment and penal iconography
  • spectacle(s) of pain
  • violence in visual culture
  • martyrs and martyrdoms

Rijeka (Croatia), June 01 – 03, 2017

Deadline for paper proposals: January 30, 2017

The conference seeks to explore and discuss recent development in the dialogue between art history, history, theology, philosophy, and cultural theory concerning the perception and definition of iconoclasm(s) in history. From the word that developed on the aggressive statements and actions against images (especially within the reference to the historical disputes in Christianity) the term has come to be applied to actions or movements that challenge apprized values and cultivated beliefs. It has been recently discussed beyond the cultural and temporal boundaries, as well as being a transformative force in cultural production. When approached it usually stands opposite to iconophilia and throughout the history the clash between two terms produced not only theoretical background but also production of works of art that shape our understanding of a particular period or religious group. We welcome academic papers that will approach these subjects in interdisciplinary and methodologically diverse angles. The themes and subjects can include the following:

o Iconoclasm within religious realms and history (censorships by religious beliefs, iconoclastia, historical debates, edicts and manifestos regarding images)
o Iconophiles’ reactions, positions and influence
o Damnatio memoriae and other political iconoclasm
o Iconoclasm in modern and contemporary history
o Iconoclasm as global term in visual arts
